Assessment 1: Learner response

 1) Type up your feedback in full

1) WWW: Some key narrative terms included

EBI: No explicit references to narrative theorists, needs to be longer.

2) WWW: Excellent analysis and good comparisons

EBI: Consider class and how this is linked to other values/ideologies.

3) WWW: Good idea of importance of producers.

EBI: Name theorists, more about audiences

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

Q1 - • Narrative codes suggest action, violence and confrontation – genre of order (Shatz)

Q2 - • Both grounded in working class British culture but perhaps inadvertently reinforcing

negative stereotypes around this. The looming council estate towers in the Ill Manors poster

emphasizes this. In the Nike advert there is also a council estate in the background.

Q3 - • Genre important for audiences: expectations of narrative, character, plot, style and content;

selection and rejection of texts – audience pleasures/gratifications; allows comparison and

discussion of media products; recognise developments and evolution in genres.

3) Read this exemplar response from a previous Year 12 (an A grade) - note this was a slightly different paper in terms of the question wording and also had an additional question 4 (we've updated it to better reflect recent exams). Identify at least one potential point for questions 1-3 from this student's paper that you could have mentioned in your assessment.

Q1 - Identified conventions of a magazine

Q2 - Ethnicity links to brand identity

Q3 - Mention of Abercrombie

4) Did you get any media terminology or theory wrong in the assessment? Make a note of it here for future revision, including theories/terminology that you could have used but didn't.

I didn't use : Any of the narrative theorists, the genre theorists, talk much about audience or mention class and how that impacts modern British society.

5) Identify your weakest question and write three bullet points that would improve on your original response. Use the mark scheme and exemplar paper to identify these points - particularly focusing on the anticipated content and the top level descriptors.

My weakest question was the 3rd one.

  • Abercrombie " Tv producers set out to exploit genre conventions.. economic sense." With the use of the modern estate , British culture the producers would have capitalised off the loyalty audiences who participate in this genre.
  • Abercrombie  - " Genres permit the creation of a loyal audience"
  •  Genre important for audiences: expectations of narrative, character, plot, style and content; selection and rejection of texts – audience pleasures/gratifications; allows comparison and discussion of media products; recognise developments and evolution in genres.
