Baseline assessment LR
1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).
1. 6/6 - 'Big weekends' not on Newsbeat2. 6/9 - put some Gerbner's Cultivation theory in there
3. 21/25- be less vague, specify since the Gentlewoman is an independent magazine it doesn't make as much as conglomerate publishers but is successful for an independent magazine and makes enough to sustain itself
Mark - 33/40
Grade - A
2) Focusing on the BBC Newsbeat question, write three ways it helps to fulfil the BBC's mission statement that you didn't include in your original assessment answer. Use the mark scheme for ideas.
- Newsbeats educational content through its story highlighting street harassment of women, serving to educate both male ad female listeners on the impact of harassment on victims
- bulletin topics offer sport and entertainment content
3) Question two asked you how useful media effects theories are in understanding the audience response to War of the Worlds. Complete the following:
- Gerbner's Cultivation theory: useful or not useful? Why?
useful in understanding how American radio's recent convention in the 1930s of 'breaking news' ("we interrupt this broadcast to bring you...") may have made audiences more likely to believe the fictional radio play was real
- Frankfurt School's Hypodermic Needle model: useful or not useful? Why?
not very useful as the theory has been widely discredited as it views media audiences to be "empty vessels" is an overly simplistic view
- Stuart Hall's Reception theory: useful or not useful? Why?
arguably more useful than traditional effects theories in analysing audience reactions. Some would have believed it, others would reject it entirely, or was Welles's intention to genuinely panic listeners
- Introduction: one sentence answering the original question and laying out your argument clearly.
Through diversification both the Gentlewoman and GQ have been very successful in attracting a target audience, despite the impact of digital media on print - both magazines have been successful in their respective lanes(traditional and online)
- Paragraph 1 content/ideas:
- diversification
- membership(international)
- GQ Heroes
- Paragraph 2 content/ideas:
- industries, decline of print over the years, what GQ did to save themselves(changing its approach to masculinity)
- essential lifestyle, Saka
- generational differences in terms of distribution and consumption
- Paragraph 3 content/ideas:
- media audiences
- Blumler and Katz, personal identity, personal relationships and surveillance(on issues not covered by mainstream media)
- Twice a year publication
- Paragraph 4 content/ideas:
-Gentlewoman reflecting feminist ideology, "how modern women live"
- Isabella Tree, Ramla Ali, Stella McCartney
- Gentlewoman, broad age group
- Conclusion: sum up your argument a final time in one sentence
- In summary the use of diversification, industry decline and media audiences is what solidify the Gentlewoman to be a more successful magazine than GQ
I would like to work on industry topics as that seems to be my weakness at the moment
