Semiotics

Part One- English by Tarun  Thind Analysis

1) What meanings are the audience encouraged to take about the two main characters of the opening film?

We, the audience are encouraged to assume that the two main characters are good for nothing thugs with nothing better to do than roam the streets aimlessly.

2) How does the end of the film emphasise de Sassure's belief that signs are polysemic- open to interpretation or more than one meaning?

At the end of the film we are made aware the both of the main characters are deaf and when both of them are portrayed to look like ruffians or people who are up to no good we are proved to have judged them wrong as we find out why they retaliated against the people who had wronged them. This emphasises how sings are polysemic as the signs the audience saw were meant to have a mutifaced meaning.

Part two-Media magazine Theory drop- semiotics

1) What did Ferdinand de Sassure suggest are the two parts that make up a sign?

He suggested that there is a sinifier(the form which the sign takes) and the signified(the concept it presents)

2) what does 'polysemy' mean?

It means the coexistence for many possible meanings for a word or phrase.

3) What does Barthes mean when he says sings can become 'naturalised'?

He means we as s society cultivate a new meaning that we all accept and become a norm in society.

4) What are Barthes five narrative codes?

Hermeneutic ,Proairetic,Semic,Symbolic and Cultural code

5) How does the writer suggest Russian doll (Netflix) uses narrative codes?

Part 3)

1)Find two examples for each icon, index and symbol. Provide images and links.

Icon-

Index-

Symbol-

2) Why are icons and indexes so important in media text?

They're very important as they relay to the audience what a media text represents and give them an idea of what it is about, drawing their interests or vice versa.

3) Why might global brands avoid using symbols in their advertising and marketing?

Symbols can be misinterpretated as they're not so clear cut.

4) Find an example of a media text where the producer has accidentally communicated the wrong meaning using icons , indexes or symbols. Why did the media project fail?

I genuinely do not understand what they were trying to achieve in this advert, it just looks completely wrong. The wording is horrible and does not relay whatever message they were trying to send.

5) Find an example of a media text that successfully uses icons, indexes and symbols to create a message that can be easily understood across the world.

Spotify wrapped is a great example as audiences knew how to engage with the product, it was so successful that people even post and share what they get in their yearly Spotify wrapped.
