  Part 1) Applying Reception theory to adverts   1) What are the preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings for the RBK 50 Cent advert? The  Hegemonic reading for the RBK advert was that 50 Cent is meant to be perceived as a role model. With the choice of the slogan "I am what I am"- he is presented as unapologetic as if he broke free from his environment, a success story. With the use of 50 Cent's stardom, and along with the use of he "street cred" and previous criminal background; some people could see how the produces are using all of this to try and relate to teenagers- mostly boys. Also because of the hyper-masculinity he protrudes , they use this to draw in younger , more impressionable teen boys. The Negotiated reading for the RBK advert is that the consumer may understand the creators i ntentions however they also see the criminal endorsement and implications others may take from the use of 50 Cent's stardom. Write a paragraph for each one exploring the way meanings are created using those media codes. Technical codes: Camera work/photographic-  In the advert there is a medium shot of 50 Cent, facing sideways towards the camera. The  sideways facing allows him to glare at the audience by conveying to them that they should be intimidated. Lighting- The lighting is dark and mysterious, referencing 50 Cent's  past as he was known to be affiliated in gang activities. Therefore the lighting conveys to the audience his ambiguous past, as half of his face is hidden in the darkness. We, the audience are encouraged to assume that the two main characters are good for nothing thugs with nothing better to do than roam the streets aimlessly. 2) How does the end of the film emphasise de Sassure's belief that signs are polysemic- open to interpretation or more than one meaning? At the end of the film we are made aware the both of the main characters are deaf and when both of them are portrayed to look like ruffians or people who are up to no good we are proved to have judged them wrong as we find out why they retaliated against the people who had wronged them.
