Audience theory 1: blog tasks

 Hypodermic needle model

1) Read this Mail Online article about the effects of videogames. How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model?

I believe the model somewhat fits in the context of the article however the the article make it clear that the results aren't definite as the experiment took place over a shorter period of time and f they were able to do the experiment longer they would be able to get more definitive results.

2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone criticise this front page?

With the bold and eye caching statement of the coverage, it insinuates an idea for people and builds all kinds of assumptions in their minds. The coverage gives a negative light to people who are single mothers and subconsciously judges them for their parenting.

3) What do you think of the hypodermic needle theory? Do audiences believe everything they see in the media?

I don't believe that audiences are like sponges that just suck up information effortlessly - passively. I believe people are always thinking weather they know it or not.

Two-step flow model

1) Summarise the two-step flow model. What is an opinion leader?

An opinion leader are people who influence how an audience react to a media product.
The two-step model is a more in-depth version of the hypodermic needle theory.

2) How do celebrities like Taylor Swift fit into the two-step flow model?

Taylor swift is a very influential celebrity and she proves the two-step flow mode right. As it seems that her endorsement of the democratic party was a big reason for voter turnout. And since she is a big influencer with a huge fanbase behind her I would say that she is a great example of the model. As just her words have such a big impact on ordinary people.

3) In your opinion, is the two-step flow theory still relevant today?

I think it is still relevant today and celebrities are a great example of it.

Uses and Gratifications theory

1) For each of the four categories, write about one media text (e.g. film, TV programme, newspaper etc.) that fits that particular audience use or pleasure. Make sure you explain WHY it fits the category and use images or clips to illustrate your points. The first one is done for you.

Media text: Outer Banks

Diversion: With the use of the action/adventure genre- the audience are able to live vicariously through the characters and are able to disengage from their own lives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXtOluUD650

Personal Relationships: The audience can engage with the the characters/ actors through social media eg buzzfeed interviews of getting to know the actors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URKprZa2srM

Personal Identity: The audience can relate to the characters through the experiences in their own lives and compare them so they can find solutions to their real life problems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9upbldRePQ

Surveillance: People want to know what's happening. Especially when it comes to things that we aren't in close proximity to, eg. the lifestyle of the rich. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRsWugHf-uY

Dependency theory

1) Do you agree that audiences have become dependent on the media? What evidence or examples can you provide to support your view?

I do believe audiences have become dependent on the media for almost all information. For news, weather it be political or gossip, its how we communicate around the world. For example the Us Presidential election, we didn't have to use News sources to provide us with evidence as we were able to find our own sources.

2) How has the growth of new and digital technology in the last 15 years changed people's dependency on the media? Is this a new problem?

We as a society are extremely codependent on the media, for some they wouldn't even be able to get around without things like google maps. And life skills that we used to have are fading away as we no longer need them , this surfaces new technological problems.

3) Reflecting on your own media use, how does your media consumption impact on your emotions? Does the media have an overall positive or negative impact on your health and wellbeing? What is your average screentime and how does this impact on your mood?

For me I think the media has an overall positive impact on my wellbeing. I've learnt more unlikely things that I wouldn't have been able t learn from those around be or a book I've read. I've learnt so much of cultures  I doubt I would've heard of if the internet didn't exist and it's put be ahead in life as I now know things that when my parents were my age , wouldn't have known.
